Why Are Atheists So Militant?

There is a common misconception that atheists are “militant” and extremely aggressive in their activism. Today, I will address this misconception.

It is not far-fetched to think that some religious folks distort reality to adhere to their own beliefs. For example, there are people that will happily believe that a walking, talking snake doomed all of mankind, but refuse to accept that everything on this planet changes over time. This distortion of reality is highly evident when they refer to us as “militant atheists.” Militant, when used as an adjective, means combative and aggressive in support of a political or social cause, and typically favoring extreme, violent, or confrontational methods.

If we were to consider that definition, we would have to concede that this actually has described the approach of the religious for centuries—and still continues to describe much of their movement today. When the media and others refer to a “militant atheist”, the object of that slander is usually an atheist who has questioned religious authority, is sharing or stating their non-belief, or has campaigned against public and enforced religious practices.
But this reflects a double standard, because it seems to apply only to atheists. Religious individuals and groups frequently declare, sometimes subtly and sometimes not, that you are a sinner and that you will suffer in hell for eternity if you do not adopt their supernatural beliefs, but they will almost never be labeled “militant” by the media or the public. Being an atheist is illegal and usually punishable by death in several countries in Africa and the Middle East, but those believers are never labeled militant.

Recently, a friend of mine complained about a “Bible Man”, a preacher that has been visiting her child’s school to teach children about the Bible. The children were not told that they did not have to attend and those that did not want to attend were “thoroughly encouraged” to attend. A further investigation uncovered that these students were often coerced into attending these sessions during school hours, a complaint was filed, and Bible Man was removed. My friend and her family began to receive death threats, including posting pictures of burning houses and sending her hate-filled messages, from Christians who were described as “loving and kind-hearted” instead of being labeled militant. I will include a link below to this story, if you are interested in learning more about the religious persecuting those that decide to opt out. Despite this unacceptable terroristic and villainous behavior, these religious individuals are called “devout” or “righteous” and churches or mosques that support this behavior are called “evangelical.”

The problem here is clear. If you’re an atheist, shut up about it. If you are open or vocal about the harms of religion, actively working against religious discrimination, or attempting to address the presence of religion in the public sphere then you are a “militant atheist.” You should be silent about what you do or don’t believe, even though that same standard does not apply to those who passionately, and sometimes violently, disagree with you.

There are no atheists armed with modern weaponry attacking Bible printing presses. There are no atheists attempting to silence your freedom of speech. There are no atheists taking away your rights by legislating against you. There are no atheists preventing you from going to church or sending you death threats. There are no atheists forcing or indoctrinating you into a lack of a belief. There are no atheists making it illegal for you to have a religious belief with the threat of death. It is impossible and will never occur.

People do not act on the lack of a belief, they act on the presence of them. Atheism has never done anything, especially not anything militant, other than doubting the claim that your god exists. If you call asking you to apply logic, reason, and rational thought to claims that have been baseless and unconfirmed for all of human history “militant”, then so be it.

TLC Cancels the Duggar show 19 Kids and Counting

Godless Engineering

19 Kids and Cancelled

It was revealed  recently that 19 Kids and Counting has been cancelled by TLC. I’m fine with that.

I’m fine with a private company cancelling a contract with an employee because they are wanting to distance themselves from a media nightmare…. or they refuse to support the Duggars fucked up sense of handling sexual abuse situations either way it’s a good move to make.

However, I can hear the cries and tears of the conservative christian right as another “poor” christian is “persecuted” because of their “faith.” Give me a fucking break.

Quite literally they are not being persecuted.

It’s not Persecution

It’s quite common in the entertainment industry that actors are dropped by Networks and TV Shows for dumb shit they do off set. This isn’t anything new.

Cynthia Watros (Lost, Titus) and Michelle Rodriguez (Lost, Fast n furious) were both relieved of their…

Are Scientists Arrogant?

Some people think that scientists are arrogant because they know more about science. However, every day of your life you rely on others to know more than you about a particular subject and you rely on their designs/theories. Architects that planned your home, construction workers that built it, engineers that designed your vehicle, IT experts that keep your internet experience running smoothly, and doctors that treat your ailments… but when it comes to cosmology and biology, the experts are absolutely arrogant, evil, and clueless. This is an extremely dismissive attitude regarding a science that allows us to have satellites in space for your cellphone functions and allows us to have vaccines against diseases that once ravaged our world.

Yet here comes the average individual to tell us how the scientists are all wrong about evolution and the big bang, but that doesn’t sound the least bit arrogant to you? Then they have the audacity to think that they can overturn nearly every field of science, including decades of rigorous study and some of the greatest minds to ever grace this earth. Next, they’ll defend their position by saying, “I’ve done my research.” If you have to say you’ve done your research, then you probably haven’t done your research.

This is applicable to any field or view, including religion, but most of the time I come across this mentality, or a variant of it, when conversing with creationists regarding evolution. Evolution is a scientific theory, which is different from the standard definition of the word “theory”, making it more of a fact. Actually, evolution is an observed fact. We’ve got over 200 years of observation of evolution, including through fossils and through observation of things living in our contemporary world. Palaeontology, Biology, and Geology are a few examples of fields that rely on evolutionary science. Few real scientists doubt the evidence or relevance of evolution.

The beautiful thing about science is that if you truly believe that the scientists are wrong and you are willing to prove it with substantial evidence, you can actually overturn the accepted models that we have today. However, if you think that your opinion or one comment that you leave on social media is going to overturn decades of scientific understanding, then you truly are willfully ignorant. There is only one reason to deny the efficacy of evolutionary biology to explain the common descent–you don’t like it because it offends your beliefs.

9 Year-Old girl fights for STEM Competition inclusion

Godless Engineering

First of all I want to praise this young girl for taking interest in the STEM fields. I’m highly supportive of anyone showing interest in the STEM fields and I especially like seeing girls actively trying to get into them. Girls in the STEM fields are significantly less in number and I want to actively promote their admittance into the field. Not because of some kind of Bro-fisted reason that I want the guy-to-girl ratio to be a certain number. That is just dumb as fuck.

The fields have been very male dominated and I am very much for equality. I want to see whoever , no matter the gender, shows an active interest in the STEM fields to be given every opportunity to explore and experience that.

The library that was hosting this event though was in fact demeaning boys while excluding girls. According to HuffPost Tech:

Why Are Atheists So Angry?

Today’s post contains a response video to Burgoghenes’ video titled, “Why Are Atheists So Angry?” He can’t seem to figure out why atheists are angry, especially with his series called “Why Atheism is Retarded”, which he removed from YouTube. He is frustrated with atheists leaving snarky comments that insult his intelligence, which is laughable considering he is insulting the intelligence of every atheist with his broad generalizations.

Please allow me to address this ridiculous video. It is no surprise that a series called, “Why Atheism is Retarded” would net you some attention. It is also no surprise that it gets negative attention. I’ve never seen the series, but I am willing to bet that it is riddled with strawman arguments—which is initially implied by the title of your series. Atheism is the lack of belief in a god. Yes, it is really that simple. You say a god exists and I don’t believe you. This is no different than people that say Big Foot exists or that aliens have abducted them. I don’t believe them either. The rejection of an extraordinary claim is not retarded—it is a sensible and skeptical response.

Furthermore, if you are going to post controversial videos, then you should expect to receive negative attention. If you can’t understand why atheists are angry, then I challenge you to do a thought experiment. Imagine that you were a Christian living deep in ISIS controlled territory. Would you be angry as the marauders came to your home to collect the Jizyah (an extra tax imposed on non-Muslims who live under Muslim rule)? Would you be angry as your neighbors called you an infidel and slandered you around town? Would you be angry when the local markets and shops refused you service because you were a Christian? Would you be angry when all of your rights were impeded and you were treated like a sub-human piece of shit? Would you be angry when they condemned you to hell and told you that you lead a miserable existence so we’ll just go ahead and send you there faster?

Thankfully, we are living in a country with a secular foundation. However, there are some that would like to send us back into the Dark Ages by instituting a Christian theocracy. Despite the fact that there is no state-sponsored religion, people are still being legislated against. This includes the LGBT individuals who have been battling for years for the access to the same rights as everyone else, along with women who have been battling a structure of compulsory gender roles, yet still do not have full rights to their reproductive organs.

I know how you feel because I used to be a Christian and just like every other Christian I had a persecution complex. I thought that my religious rights were being infringed upon and that this was a Christian nation. I was oblivious to the truth and believed all the lies I had been told when all I needed was to take off the blinders. I encourage you to open your mind to the perspective of others. There is a great book by Greta Christina titled, “Why Are You Atheists So Angry”, that would probably answer all of your questions.

In it she has such gems as this, “Atheists’ anger doesn’t prove that we’re selfish, or joyless, or miserable. It shows that we have compassion, and a sense of justice. We’re angry because we see terrible harm all around us, and we feel desperately motivated to stop it.” That terrible harm is religion. Religion upholds faith as a most virtuous trait. Faith is the belief in things without evidence. If you had evidence, you wouldn’t need faith. Faith is not a pathway to truth and it is definitely not a virtue. Most suicide bombers exemplify the word faith. They are so sure of their beliefs and what is going to happen to them after they die that they are willing to take their own lives in a suicide bombing.

This practice of belief in things without evidence has led to antiscientific attitudes. Despite all the evidence to the contrary, people deny that climate change is happening. This destructive method of thinking leads to decisions that are made that support destroying the very planet that we need for survival. The support of faith as the most innocuous human behavior is just one of the many ways that religion is a terrible harm.

To continue, you complain that atheists are downvoting your videos. People have the option of upvoting, downvoting, or doing nothing at all when they see your video. You should know that people are more motivated to leave feedback by a bad experience than a positive or neutral one. With that being said, you should strive to produce quality content that your viewers will like or else they are definitely going to downvote it. YouTube is a rough place and chances are people are always going to downvote your video. It would help if you didn’t make videos that misrepresent the position of non-belief; however, if you want to keep doing that, you have the freedom to do so. Perhaps you could get an atheist’s perspective on things to understand why the separation of church and state benefits us all, especially the religious.

I don’t find it surprising at all that you are receiving snarky comments for continuously making fallacious videos that misrepresent atheism. I know that it can be a huge blow to your ego when someone questions your intelligence, but if you cannot grasp a simple definition—what are we to think? I am not sure what your justification for living is, but anyone who believes in an afterlife that is infinitely better than this life really has no justification for living at all. Why would you want to stick around in a world of unprecedented suffering when you could be lounging in paradise with an omnibenevolent creator? I am sorry to disappoint you, but this was hardly a challenge for me to address. “Your work” must not be that great since you have deleted the majority of the videos, including this one, from your channel.

The way the universe plays out is simple. It appears that if there were a purpose to the universe, it would be to create black holes. It is not to challenge you. You’d fail 99.9% of all the challenges anyway. We’re barely surviving on earth and you have the arrogance and the audacity to say that the universe is here to challenge you. Blasphemy! Also, I’m not sure which truth you think the universe is helping you to ascertain. All the universe ever does to me is try to kill me consistently on a daily basis. Neither the universe nor nature helps us to learn right from wrong. Right and wrong are human constructs that we put in place along with other concepts in order for us to live the most fulfilling and fair life possible. Spend one night in the heart of the rain forest and let me know what you learn about right and wrong.

Personally, I think your videos are disingenuous because you know exactly what it’s like to not truly believe in a god. You don’t believe in Allah and Krishna, yet the people that do have the exact same arguments as you. You can’t all be right, but you can all be wrong. And you are all wrong.

Retiring? Sorry, Christians..

Godless Engineering

Courtesy of RWW, this little gem was sitting in my inbox last night:

Retirement is not a biblical concept,” Barton said, putting forth a theory that he appears to have stolen from Rabbi Daniel Lapin.  “That is a pagan concept that comes from the Babylonian system.  If you want to live in Egypt, you wan to live in Babylon, great, retire.  God’s people, that is not a model.

Why?  Because.. God..

Why is this of such concern to an Atheist?

When speaking in terms of “retirement age”, we’re often discussing our parents and grandparents, as is, in my case.  In particular, my own mother, who will be 68 this year.

She has worked her entire life, draws roughly a $435 check from Social Security.  Her mortgage payment is $700/mo, alone.  She still works, but not for the reason you might have found obvious.

When…

God speaks to church, Congregation shuts God up

Godless Engineering

Yesterday during church service at the Madison Heights Church of God in Daytona Beach, FL., a man stood up before the congregation and proclaimed his divinity in front of all…. then things got weird:

A local newspaper reported that the 39-year-old man walked up to the pulpit at the Madison Heights Church of God and screamed that he was God, and then threatened the pastor.

Well… what the fuck did that pastor do to piss God off so much that he came down from his throne in the clouds, possess this poor man in the congregation and say ‘Hey you… FUCK. YOU.

Apparently the congregation wasn’t going have any of God’s drunken shitty attitude…

Church members grabbed the man and restrained him until police arrived. Police said the man is mentally ill. The pastor refused to press charges, but police took the man to the hospital, where he was being kept…
