Atheists, Please Stop Being So Hostile!

In my experience, I find that, generally, atheists are the most hostile people that I meet on the internet. There are many reasons for this, including perceived obscurity and solipsistic introjection. It doesn’t benefit you to be aggressive with people on the internet, nor is it going to win you any favor in their eyes. It doesn’t matter if you are right or you are being rational, if you are being a dick people are not going to listen.

Ridicule should never be the first step. Give people the benefit of the doubt. Always try reasoning with people first. It is likely that most theists have never had their beliefs questioned, hell I made it 20 years before anyone ever challenged my beliefs.

I understand that some people are lost causes and so far gone that nothing can bring them back. When a theist goes to a theist they are looking for reassurance, but when a theist goes to an atheist they are looking to have their beliefs questioned. This presents us with a unique opportunity to quell the stereotype of atheists being militant, emotionally empty, or purposeless. We have to share the positive side of atheism. My life has changed in amazing ways since I became an atheist and I want to share that with people that come seeking answers. I encourage you to do the same.

  1. I know that sometimes people do need an aggressive attack on their religion, but it can also make people put their fingers in their ears and shout ‘la la la’ as loud as they can. Like I do with my posts, convincing people of things bit by bit is quite effective. If you get someone to agree with you that it would be easier if God was not omnipotent and omniscient, you can build up to the problems these traits pose and really get people to question their beliefs.
