What are Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)?

Bill Nye recently made headlines when he admitted to changing his position on GMOs after learning the facts. The fact that even a scientifically-minded person like Nye could have had doubts about the safety and necessity of GMOs underscores the need for education about exactly what they are and why we are creating them.

Genetically Modified Organisms are any organism which humans have manipulated genetically. One famous example are Glofish, fish which have been bioengineered to luminesce under UV light, and which are now sold as pets. While there certainly are concerns about genetically modifying animals, most of the controversy surrounding GMOs centers around crops and concerns about the safety of consuming them.
